Human Rights-based Approach to Maternal Health Policy and Implementation: An Analysis of Abiye Safe-Motherhood Policy of Ondo State Nigeria

A human rights-based approach that recognizes women deserve the right to health is critical achieving equitable reduction of maternal mortality in Nigeria, a country second largest contributor global mortality. This study evaluated extent which Abiye safe motherhood policy Ondo State government Nigeria incorporated rights-principles its formulation and implementation. The involved interviews focus group discussions OHCHR rights principles served as basis for thematic analysis data. Findings indicate initiative exemplified core health. Whereas, showed stronger practice terms participation, empowerment, non-discrimination international assistance, there was limited indication adherence accountability, transparency, sustainability principles. responded needs fairly acceptable ways; allowing creation opportunities enabling conditions fulfillment reproductive-age women. It recommended governments at all levels should prioritize incorporating standards into new or existing programs way meets respect welfare every woman pregnancy childbirth.
